In May 2020, police officers killed unarmed black civilians, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Duante Wright, Andrew Hill, Manuel Ellis, Daniel Prude, and Rayshard Brooks, sparking nationwide protests. Exacerbated by a divisive election year and a worldwide pandemic, the demonstrations drew thousands to the streets, which occasionally gave way to riots, armed protests, and, in extreme cases, fatalities.
