Marsha thumbs through some of her financial statements as she packs things into boxes. Her husband promised to build her a house so that they could move out of the trailer they lived in on Pine Cove Campgrounds. He did odd jobs around the community during the day while Marsha cared for his adopted disabled daughter, Nikki, and their granddaughter, Zoe.

The couple wasn’t making enough money and accrued a considerable amount of debt. So, when he gave Marsha an ultimatum about co-signing for a house in Dover, TN, she said no. “His face got red, and he balled up his fist. I was afraid. I didn’t know if he was going to hit me.”

Nikki shows me where some of her hair is shorter than the rest. In a fit of rage, her father threatened Nikki with a tire iron and tried to drag her out of the mobile home by her hair ripping it from her scalp leaving Nikki with a grisly reminder of the violent incident.

Marsha shows me the eviction notice her landlord wrote that reads, “I do not want the Sheriff called here because of your drama. I asked you a question and this is what happens, there was no need for this. There are other complaints, but it doesn’t matter now.”

Masha’s husband has sleep apnea and needs a C-PAC machine. He contacted the landlord about retrieving it from Marsha’s storage unit. Marsha rightfully called the Sheriff to enforce her order of protection, which forbids third-party contact. The landlord served her this eviction notice in response to the incident.

The family didn’t have the financial resources or the energy to fight the illegal eviction. They were forced to vacate the property by Wednesday, September 30, 2020.

The family could not afford movers. The heavy physical labor of unloading their storage unit full of large furniture, moving the heavy appliances, and packing their belongings into the Uhaul fell onto Marsha, who is in her late sixties, and Nikki, who has significant cognitive and physical disabilities.

Marsha cannot bear to watch her disabled daughter, Nikki, load the last of their remaining belongings into the Uhaul.

Nikki breaks down into tears as the tow truck pulls out of the lot with their mobile home en route to Dover, TN just outside Clarksville.
